History of Fyn
A village from the time of Hans Christian Andersen
The Fyn Village is an open-air museum that presents a village on Fyn as it was likely to have looked in the 1800s. The museum consists of a number of houses and farms that originally stood in villages all over Fyn and the islands. A visit to The Fyn Village is like a trip to the country in the time of Hans Christian Andersen. An authentic rural environment has been recreated here to show typical Fyn traits such as the distinctive timber-framed buildings and their flower-filled gardens, with hedges and livestock, a village pond and high street – all surrounded by cultivated fields.
When you arrive at The Fyn Village, it is a good idea to start by calling in at the museum visitors’ centre. In addition to housing the ticket office, museum shop and other practical facilities, this centre is the place to go to find out more about what you will see in the Village itself.
For example, you can start by watching the 15-minute film about rural life in the 1800s. The film describes the great developments that took place at that time in the fields of technology, science, democracy and so on.
The same history is presented in a different format at the exhibition entitled “MODERN TIMES? rural communities on Fyn in the 1800s”, which bases its description of the dynamic 1800s on artefacts, maps, pictures and models.
Living history
There is more to a village than simply farms and houses. An important part of the history of the village is communicated through the people and animals that bring the old buildings to life. On national holidays and during the peak season in the summer, you will have the chance to see the farmer working in the field with the farm labourer. Meanwhile, the maid helps the farmer’s wife in the kitchen and the sound of the blacksmith’s hammer rings out in the main street. Livestock of old, traditional races graze in the paddocks and contribute to the overall sight and scents – as does the smell of freshly brewed beer …
During the summer, the village hosts a range of activities and events for both children and adults, and many of them are actually part of the normal maintenance work of the village. For details of events, see the diary at www.museum.odense.dk .
